Project Title: Strengthening a more diverse response to expand immunization coverage to zero-dose children and missed communities in Oromia Region

Oromia Development Association (ODA); in partnership with HUNDEE, has been implementing HUNDEE Oromo grassroots development initiatives in 10 woredas of Horro Guduru Wollega and 8 woredas of Kellem Wollega zone of Oromia Region. The project intended to Increase immunization coverage and reduce zero-dose and under-vaccinated children in conflict-affected zones of the region.

Intervention area

Kellem Wollega Zone –Dale Sadi, Dale Wabera, Dambidollo, Gawo Kebe, Hawa Gelan, Lalo Kile, Sadi Chenka, and Seyo woredas

Horro Guduru Wollega Zone– Abay Chomen, Abe Dongoro, Amuru, Chomen Guduru, Guduru, Hababo Guduru, Horo, Horo Buluq, Jima Geneti, and Jima Rare woredas

Target population: Children with 12-59 month age

          Zero dose children: 52,924

         Under vaccinated children: 72,357

The Project Outcomes

Outcome1: Increased enrollment and vaccination of Zero-doze and under vaccinated children

Outcome 2: Improved integration of catchup vaccination and implementation of periodic intensification of routine immunization activities (PIRI)

Outcome 3: Increased demand for vaccination of Zero Doze and under vaccination children in hard to reach and in security areas;

Outcome 4: Improved Human Centered Design (HCD) in service delivery for Zero Doze and under vaccinated children at Health centers and Health Post;

Major Performances (January 2025-June 2026)

  1. Project launch up /Sensitization Workshop was held at regional, zonal and woreda level.
  2. Motorcycles, Laptops, Internet apparatus and M & E tools were procured and distributed
  3. Interface meeting was conducted with 463 community representatives; 38 client committee members.
  4. Village Health Leaders training: 984 Village Health Leaders were trained and deployed to support community awareness/demand creation for service uptake.
  5. School-based immunization sensitization workshop was conducted at woreda level involving 548 school principals; and sensitization sessions were held at 548 schools.
  6. Human Centered Design training: TOT was given to 204 woreda level EPI team members; and cascade training to 903 HFs MCH task force members and Health Extension Workers (HEWs).
  7. Immunization In Practice (IIP) training was given to 49 EPI focal persons from woreda health offices and health facilities.
  8. Co-designing sessions was conducted with 494 woreda level immunization stakeholders on the baseline assessment finding ; and  778 participants attended the 1st manual micro-planning session  after which 40 PHCU Directors and EPI Focal persons of each woreda attended digital RED/REC  micro-planning workshops at zonal level
  9. Cold Chain management: 79 Vaccine Refrigerators were maintained at 57 Health Facilities.
  10. 300 Tickler Boxes and 240 Foam Pads, 58,000 Reminder Cards, 350 Catch up Registries, 350 Talley Sheets, 350 Reporting Tools and 900 vests were distributed to 18 woreda HFs.
  11. Identifying and vaccinating zero-dose dose children. 45,902(87%) Zero dose children with 12-59 month age were identified and vaccinated with Penta 1.
  12. Identifying and vaccinating under vaccinated children. 65,520 (91%) under vaccinated children with 12-59 months age were identified and vaccinated with Penta 3.
  13. Regional Level Review Meeting and Joint Integrative Supportive supervision with Oromia Health Bureau, Coordination Meeting with Donor and Oromia Health Bureau, Zonal and Woreda Level review meeting were conducted quarterly, biannually and annually.
